Title: Hello from Queensland, Australia
Post by: Catelyn on August 16, 2013, 01:28:43 AM
Hello to all you lovely RayVers!

This is my first post, but Iíve had a ball over the last few days reading the boards and in some cases literally laughing out loud at some of the posts.  I think my husbandís getting a bit worried about me!

Actually, my hubby is responsible for my Ray-velation in the first place.  About a year ago, Hubby, being a fan of Nazi Zombie flicks, got a copy of Outpost and I, not being quite so invested in such movies and having patiently endured some truly terrible ones in the past, kind of ignored it for the first half hour....  Then I started to notice the tall, nice-looking actor who was playing D.C.  Strangely, he seemed to get better-looking the longer I watched (funny, never been much of a fan of stubble and menís knitwear up until then)...

Bravely overcoming my extreme disappointment that his character got killed off by the N Zís, some days later I tuned into Dexter Season 7, Ep 1. ďOoh, look!Ē I said to myself.  ďItís that bloke from Outpost....(cut to the end of episode 9, weeks later)...and heís been killed off.  AGAIN!Ē   :(

Since then, Iíve been madly grabbing copies of almost everything Rayís been in and am delighted to see some of the time he DOES survive at the end of the movie.  Oh, and Hubbyís thoroughly sick of me talking about Frank Castle hanging upside down from the chandelier spraying bullets from his twin MP5ís.

Anyhoo, enough from me.  Just glad to be here. :)

Ooo!  I forgot about Jayne Mansfield's Car!  I think that may be OnDemand as of...today!

Hi, sparkle!     Good to meet you.

Yep, have seen all of Rome.  Foxtel (cable TV in OZ) started screening it in the last 12 months (gee, we're not behind the rest of the world, or anything :(), and actually had a Rome marathon over the last month, on Friday and Saturday nights.  So basically, the home phone was unplugged, the mobile turned off and nothing short of a house fire was going to dislodge me from the couch on those nights.  And yes, I have a MAJOR crush on Titus Pullo.  Luckily, my hubby's got a bit of a man crush on the character as well, cos I now own the DVDs.

I haven't read Divergent.  Is his character going to be really horrible, do you think, or bad but likeable like Isaak Sirko?

Looking forward to Thor. We usually get big movie releases out here the same time as in the US, so hopefully we won't be waiting too long. Bet nobody screens Jayne Mansfields Car, though.  I also noticed Firefly's trousers, though I did not get to view them via the magic of Imax.  I think I've got a bit of a thing for him, too. Is that a bit wrong?

When I started looking for Ray references on the net, one of the first things I found was your fan art.  I think they're brilliant  :)  (Just call me mushy, too!)

Would love to hit the chat room, but yes, the time difference may prove a problem.

I think it's great that this forum provides an outlet for Ray-related gushing  :)

Getting dark, here.  Hmm, might just be time before dinner to sneak in an episode of Rome  ;)

Cheers.

Welcome to the laughing academy, Catelyn. I show up for chats occasionally, when the ladies here organise them. (Tis always the ladies. The few chaps here organise naff all, as blokey sorts are wont to do.) We've occasionally even talked about Ray!

Ooo!  I forgot about Jayne Mansfield's Car!  I think that may be OnDemand as of...today!

I saw it. Interesting concept that appeared to have suffered all the way from writing to editing. Some characters were incredibly understated (Robert Duvall, who stole every scene he was in, oddly enough) and others leant too heavily towards the melodramatic (Billy Bob Thornton as one of three brothers all wanting dad Duvall's approval). One character who really shone was dropped altogether in the anti-climactic finale, as if the editor forgot her. Ray got starkers though so you ladies should be chuffed anyway.  ;D

It was...not so good.  Billy Bob Thorton doesn't interest me in any way so that part wasn't surprising.  But I was surprised that, as a director, he managed to make almost everybody else look as interesting as wilted lettuce.  TigerFlwr warned us about that.

Two exceptions were; Frances Connor (Mr. Selfridge), who did a hilarious scene, enthusiastically reciting naked poetry in her delightful English accent (she's an Aussie but did a great American accent in Mr. Selfridge) and Robert Duvall.  I don't know why you were surprised that Robert Duvall stole every scene, Titus.  Robert Duvall is one of our most beloved and highly esteemed character actors. We have two or three great actors over here, too, you know, though I'll admit the UK has more of 'em.

On the bright side, Ray isn't even one degree of separation from Kevin Bacon anymore!  Well, that's something, isn't it?

But Billy Bob's show of appreciation was so revolting and distasteful I had to FF. But maybe that's just me.

John Hurt and Robert Duvall are two of my all time favorite actors and although I loved seeing them together even they couldn't breathe any life into this BB-heavy drear-fest, IMHO.

I remained unchuffed. THAT scene was supposed to be longer, but it was cut so we could see MORE of - you guessed it - Billy Bob. :frown:

No, you're right, it was a truly terrible film.  I didn't get the motivations of most of the characters other than the motivation of the one person we never saw...Naomi.  What was clear to me was why she left and never came back.

The rest of it was some version of "war really damaged me and that's why I'm so messed up."  But there was something really awful about this film that stood in the way of feeling anything for any of the characters or understanding what motivated them.  Kevin Bacon's character might as well not even have been there, Ray's character was particularly weak and whingy, and Billy Bob's character was simply weird.

As for Ray being starkers, no, Titus, not even Ray starkers could make that film worth watching.  Besides, he may have been starkers as far as the film crew was concerned, but what ended up on screen?  Same thing happened in Rome.  I mean, if you're going to be starkers on film, do it up right, like Purefoy did as Marc Antony!

The surprise wasn't that Duvall stole every scene, it was that he did it with such an understated performance!

Loved Ron White though.  :3drnk:

Oops, should we be discussing this on the forum set up for it....?

Anyway. Kevin Bacon as a long haired, WAY over-aged WWII vet who is a hippy? Utterly ridiculous, but perhaps Billy Bob got his wars mixed up and was thinking of Vietnam?

Loved Ron White though.

Me too, even though his role was written as a stereotypical, back-slapping, blustering used car salesman type we've seen a million times before, he managed to be likable and amusing.
I would have liked to have seen more of him, but can sympathize with his wife pushing him out the door as soon as humanly possible. Yes....I do understand that. :drule:
Sorry, Ron.

I'm not a fan of full frontal, but would rather have seen the entire cast starkers than that one interminable scene of shirtless Billy Bob. Even with ffing, it seemed to last an hour.
Oh, my eyes.    :hide: Billy, please keep it covered.

I'm just grateful Billy Bob didn't show us his everything!   :shocking:

I don't want to sound ungrateful for that mercy, but he showed way more than I wanted to see and we were also subjected to untenable sound effects during that (obviously)too rousing recital of "Charge of the Light Brigade" which put images in my mind that no normal person should have to bear.
