Ray is The Punisher
« on: July 21, 2007, 09:50:45 PM »

I'm breaking my silence since the leaks are about to start and I'd rather you hear this at home than on the streets.

Ray's next project is ... The Punisher. If you're not familiar with the name, it's one of Marvel Comic's popular (anti) heroes. The reader's digest version:

The Punisher, a fictional vigilante and anti-hero in the Marvel Comics Universe. Frank Castle was a family man, a highly decorated marine, and on his way to having a wonderful life. But all of that changed while he was on leave and picnicking with his family in Central Park. They accidentally stumbled onto a mob killing and the mobsters opened fire, killing Frank’s wife, his children, and ultimately, his spirit. Frank barely escaped, but one thing was sure. The events that transpired in that park changed his life forever. Abandoning his career in the military, Frank took his skills of warfare and turned them onto the ones that killed his family. But he didn’t stop there. Frank Castle’s old life was dead. Now, as the Punisher, he hands out the same death sentences to those whom he deems as part of the criminal world.

Directing the film is Lexi Alexander, a Germany born female director who directed the 2005 Elijah Wood film "Green Street Hooligans".  She was born in Mannheim, Germany, and in her childhood, she began kickboxing and karate. At the age of 19, she became world champion in kickboxing and karate.

To be shot on location in Montreal and distributed by Lionsgate, Punisher 2 is currently slated for a 2008 release.

I'm really excited for Ray and I think it's pretty obvious why he was cast. Given the general description of the character it's easy for the part to be superficial. It's tough to give that type of character depth - something Ray's proven to be quite skilled at (i.e., Pullo).

And, frankly, physically he's spot on: Frank Castle.

Not only that, this character is a perfect combination of both characters I found earlier for him on IMDB...John Clark from the Tom Clancey novels and The Equaliser!  I'm simply thrilled for him!

AND, this could be a franchise!  Oh the dear man is absolutely perfect for it, and I wish him all the best things in the world for it!

Oh god!  I haven't slept in an age, and now I fear I'll never get to it tonight!

Hi all,

I have been away and just got to come back here for a visit and WOW :cheer: what GREAT NEWS. I am wondering if this new deal was the reason Ray was in LA?????
Oh , 2008?  so far off (like waiting for Lost S4 to start in Feb. or the past delay between ROME S1 and S2) .
congrats Ray, very excited fan here in CA.

Cheers

*is confused*  IMDB says this film was made in 2004, also by Lionsgate.  What's the scoop, Lotis?

Anybody who reads anything about this, please post it!

This is not the first Punisher movie, there were 2 previous attempts.  There was an '80s version with Dolph Lundgren in the lead. Then it was attempted again in 2004, with Thomas Jane in the role (and John Travolta as the bad guy).

This film was to star Jane again as Castle. However, as is often the case, there's been some changes in script and involved parties. But from the sounds of it, the studio wants to do justice (pun intended) to the popular Marvel character.

I saw both movies. While many Punisher fans were happy with Jane, I think they'll be pleased with Ray.

This is not the first Punisher movie, there were 2 previous attempts.  There was a dreadful cheesy 80s version with Dolph Lundgren in the lead. Then it was attempted again in 2004, with Thomas Jane in the role (and John Travolta as the bad guy).

I think there will be some initial pouting since the Jane fans are likely still bummed over his departure. But I think they'll eventually come around and see that Marvel hasn't disappointed.  8)
