In an interview with Aint-it-Cool-News, John Dahl finally talked about “Punisher 2″, and his involvement (or lack thereof), and why he won’t be helming the film. Dahl’s biggest contention seems to be that he would rather do a Punisher movie with “a vindictive, kick-ass guy that just shoots people and has no remorse”, but that the studios wanted something more serious.

Oh this bodes very well for this film.  It's why they chose Ray!  They wanted something more!

Nomad we obviously read different articles. The one I read by Thomas Jane he said he bailed out from doing it because he didn't 'believe in the script' and wanted to give the fans something more worthy. ~In the same site it also goes on to say that Walter Hill wanted involvement, but they were not interested. Sorry to say, the article also says they banded it around and were now desperate for someone to take on the 'part' of The Punisher! (This was, I  believe, either May or June time)

Per IMDB writers for Punisher 2 now include Kurt Sutter from "The Shield" and Stuart Beattie from, among other things, the Disney "Pirates of the Carribean" moveis.  Sounds like they are investing in a writing staff to deliver a product.

I agree, Camamar.

I would have loved to see Tim Burton take a stab at directing something like this.  I loved his dark version of Batman.   :director:

But I hope nothing but the best for this movie for Ray!!!!!    :yahoo:

The article cited here refers to comments made not by Thomas Jane but by the former director John Dahl.  That the two of them are separated from the project for different reasons is not surprising.

All of this is completely subjective.  What one person considers worthy, another does not.  I'd prefer to trust Ray's instincts here.  I was very impressed with the message he posted on this site, and I think that trust is well-placed.

Yes. I imagine they were desperate.  How very fortunate for them that Ray happened to be available and so perfectly fit their vision.  I remember the same situation existed with the Titus Pullo role.  The Rome casting agents had searched many months for the right actor.  Ray wasn't available because he had been working on King Arthur.  They must have been similarly desperate by the time Ray walked in the door.   The goddess Fortuna smiled on them all, neh?  And she smiles on Ray again.  What does that tell you?

It tells me Nomad that Ray has some very good 'fans'. But I love it when 'we' on the forum seem to get so 'possessive/protective'. He, I am sure, is a lovely guy. But he is also an intelligent man and therefore if he reads the site I~ am sure he would like some subjective/objective comments. We don't know him and therefore I guess it would be more respectful to step back a little sometimes, as I am sure his family/friends do - as I am sure, and hope,my family and friends would in giving 'good' opinions and not being blinded by 'love' of a person. It helps in the long run

I think there will be some initial pouting since the Jane fans are likely still bummed over his departure. But I think they'll eventually come around and see that Marvel hasn't disappointed.  8)

I'm very much enjoying reading all over the internet the reaction to this casting.  Fans of comic book super heroes run the gamut from those who can quote Latin to those who can barely string together three words in a complete sentence.

It's interesting to note that so far in my "research" members of the former group are intrigued, even heartened, by the casting, while members of the latter group are starting petitions to retain Thomas Jane as Frank Castle and otherwise grunting their dissatisfaction.  No matter. Resistance to change is nearly universal.  Once the naysayers experience Ray's Frank Castle, I predict they'll forget all about Thomas Jane.

Ray doesn't seem like other actors who have to fight for a role. They seem to just fall right into his lap. I believe that when the time is right God let's it happen. Maybe if Ray got success when he was younger he would be washed  up now.  From what he said in the message he doesn't seem to be chasing the fame train. I really don't see him going to the see and be seen places in order to get his face in the papers.

Ray has all of us helping with the box office of his movies by going to the theater and buying the dvds. So continue to spread his name around the world. Soon when they say the name Brad Pitt people will go who? but when they say Ray Stevenson there will be such a roar that it will be heard round the world. :grouphug:

Sheesh. I read some comments on IMdB in which some guys (I think they were guys ) said Ray needs to get more muscular to play The Punisher. Someone called him a "tank" who needed to become more 'cut' or whatever he said. I think he said he did see Ray as Titus Pullo and Dagonet in King Arthur. Who didn't think he was looking plenty muscular as Titus Pullo :crush:?? (He was more covered-up as Dagonet.) I wonder if "tank" is a term for body types that the gay community uses, like the term "bear". *thinking about looking that up*

I wonder if Thomas Jane bulked up to the point where he looked like he had big boulders under his skin? I don't really go for the Incredible Hulk look. If Ray bulks up some more, though, I'm sure I'll find him to be just fine  :squirm: .
