The Punisher for beginners
« on: August 23, 2007, 04:11:22 AM »

Just wondering if any Punisher fans can recommend some reading for an absolute beginner (preferably something available on Amazon or elsewhere online)...? :coffee:

AC, went to an event with my son at the local library yesterday. Saw they had many Marvel books - though nothing re The Punisher. Librarian informed me that it wasn't really kiddie like so they don't stock it - though they do have a collection of books re The Mafia!!! Do we think that The Punisher will be an 18 certificate?

I don't know how it'll be rated in the UK. I believe Lionsgate intends for it to have an US rating of R (under age 17 needs to be accompanied by adult/guardian). The next rating up is NC17 (no one age 17 and under is allowed).

US Rating R falls somewhere between UK's 15 & 18 certificate?

If you can find them:

Essential Punisher has most of the most important 'Classic' Punisher moments.  This shouldn't be too hard to find.

Year One is a fantastic origin story, but difficult to find.

If you can find the Cell and the Tyger, by Garth Ennis, those are great.  As well as The Slavers.  THere are more, but I 'll find them after.

After Y2K, the end of the world had become a cliché. But who was I to talk, a brooding underdog avenger alone against an empire of evil out to right a grave injustice. Everything was subjective. There were only personal apocalypses. Nothing is a cliché when it's happening to you.

The Danish library system is really great
My 'own' library has 'Welcome Back, Frank' and most of Garth Ennis' other works (exept 'The Cell and the Tyger') I have ordered from other libraries in Denmark  :cheer:
Now I can divide my reading time between books about Native Americans, horses and The Punisher  :bookworm:  :cheer2:

Thanks for the info Lotis. I had anticipated from reading the script outline that it would not be a PG12 as a lot of the other Marvel type movies have been - sounds quite 'adult' in content compared to the others. Reminds me more of the 'Death Wish' films. They were BIG box office over here. Hopefully Punisher will follow suit.

Well these are some of the best IMO...Enjoy, most of these...well all of these are not for someone who thinks batman is too violent, these are for mature readers so don't be surprised by perverse language and gruesome violence and nudity.

I've now read the first part of 'Welcome back, Frank' and I really liked it. I'm not much of a comic book-person, but I find this great ..... :punisher:
And a couple of excuses for Ray to take of his shirt  :cool2: ... and kick some butt  :guns2: :karate:

Yeah... That book isn't terrible good. It's essentially just payback for the fact that any time The Punisher is in a crossover with another character they always beat him up and tell him that he's know better than the criminals.

The Punisher: MAX series is really where it's at. All of it is great so you really can't go wrong with that.

Hi Odiin  and welcome to the board  :welcome:
Cool name btw ... Odin is my favourite of the Old Norse Gods. Being Danish I feel pretty close to them and I have studied Old Norse Mythology at university. Pretty great  :rockon2:
Looking forward to read the rest of the comics.
