Thomas Jane as The Punisher
« on: February 16, 2008, 01:00:47 PM »

Happened to stumble onto the Thomas Jane film the other night on TV. Not very interesting stuff I have to say, and at times unintentionally (?) funny.
For instance, the Punisher is attacked by the Russian and a life-and-death fight follows, while the soundtrack plays ´La donna e mobile´...

and way too much screen time with Thomas Jane walking around topless (another case of showing off muscle instead of acting ability?)

All in all a not very interesting film...John Travolta was just icing on the so called cake as a ridiculous bad guy.

I've never got John Travolta...

It's sounds as if the new Punisher can only be an improvement.

Indeed, redshift...in fact, just Ray being in the new film makes it better, even before anybody has seen it!

The fight with the Russian and Punisher while "La donna e mobile" was playing was intentional. There was as much bad parts to the movie as good. There was sarcastic remarks made by Frank that seemed more likely to be made by Spidey.

I understand this is a Ray Stevenson Fan site but please try to get some background on the Punisher and even Thomas Jane for the matter before you trash him like that. From posts that I saw Arsh put up and people saying as long as we can see his face. Im pretty sure you all or at least most of you wouldn't of minded if Ray was walking around with his shirt off. Tom Jane is still a very talented actor, even if he shows of his stomach or not. Plus in that movie the main part, that I recall, of him with his shirt off was when he was at the beach with his family and a few times of him pointing a shirt on.

The story arc that that movie was based off of had a lot of humor in it and I think it was pulled off pretty well. If you guys are interested in reading them you can get the collected versions. Just check out Welcome Back Frank. Then with this movie we have what is now going on and that is the MAX series.

Dear Intelligent Moron,

I have read all of the Punisher Max comics...and liked them. I did not particularly enjoy the Thomas Jane movie or his acting...this is simply my opinion.

And I assure you...I prefer to see Ray dressed and acting, not simply walking around the set showing off his muscles. The topless bit with Thomas Jane that I was referring to was set in the Punisher´s flat and in my opinion completely unmotivated storywise. Again; my opinion.

Hi AC!  I'm with you on the Thomas Jane version, mostly because it didn't reflect much of The Punisher as he appears in various versions of the comics.  I especially like the Ennis MAX version, so Ray's film will be very much to my taste as he's mentioned that's the version he and Lexi went for.

As far as Jane's baring of his chest is concerned...well, it's hard to blame him for that. Sex sells and it's everywere as even the most casual watcher of, for example, Rome will attest.  I didn't object to it so much, but you're right...it didn't have much to do with the story. I'll be curious to see how Lexi and Ray address that issue.

Nomad both the Thomas Jane version and Ray Stevenson version are based off of Garth Ennis material. Jane before Ennis was let loose in the Max series and Ray after they finally released him.

Aemilia Camilla, I understand that it is your opinion and I have nothing against that but the part about being against the humor and all. My point was that that was all Ennis... i know Hensleigh wrote it and made it part of a script but the russian and all the humor was Ennis.

You should check out the Welcome back Frank line. It is when Ennis started on Punisher there are a total of 37 issues and you can find them collected.

I've just watched said film, and I find myself agreeing with AC  and Nomad as regards the film overall, but I must say,I rather liked Thomas Jane. He wasn't bad at all. The best part of the film, in fact.

As for John Travolta...

After hearing more negative than positive comments in the past regarding the Thomas Jane Punisher, I was very surprised that I actually enjoyed it. I thought Jane looked better than the promo shots I had seen of him as the Punisher too.

I was expecting to turn off the TV after 15 mnts but stayed till the end. I didn't pay much attention as to whether Jane had his shirt off or on. I'm not going to judge the directing, script, players, scenery, dance sequences etc; I just enjoyed it. Therefore from that stand point, to me, it was a 'good' film!

I know this isn't nice, but the bolded comment is so damn funny, I couldn't resist passing it along.  :devilish:

Thomas Jane, or Tom Jane as he likes to be called, got picked up for DUI early yesterday morning. The star of The Punisher, and the only actor alive to make someone say, "Wow, I miss Dolph Lundgren," was apparently trying to break the sound barrier when the California Highway Patrol stopped him, according to the AP.

http://thesuperficial.com/2008/03/thomas_jane_gets_dui_going_124.php

I wish they wouldn't identify Jane as the "star of The Punisher."  Confusion with His Lordship is likely to ensue.  Let's hope not.

Of course, IM.  But lots of people may not make that distinction right off the bat.
