I have been having a bit of trouble staying on this site but I am giving it a try again.....

  I love Dexter and can't wait to see Ray in my home every week again like he did in Rome...you must see it Labia..I know it is on in UK.

Yes, I've seen that Dexter Season 6 is on here in the UK but alas, I haven't had a chance for a lookie yet. My TV viewing at the moment is a weekly dose of The Apprentice, old Time Team's as and when I have a bit of time (the Roman ones are my fave... of course!), and some old Sherlock Holmes films with Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce which I recorded.   I dunno how you'd spot an evil spammer but I can imagine that there are mischevious people wanting to cause havoc, particularly the sort of spammers wot seem to have got hold of my email address and pester me to buy little blue things... and we ain't talking smurfs!

I'm certain that you've done a tremendous job, Lotis and will continue to do so. I'm also sure the smooth running of the site belies the huge amount of constant effort put in - but - 498 dubious registrations? That seems an awful lot? Perhaps it's the cheery, accepting and possibly naive RayVer in me, wot would trust everyone as a geniune fan.

We get as little as a few hundred in the course of one work day, and 1000-2000 overnight.  I'd like to think there are that many Ray fans clamoring to join, but I'm having a hard time believing they're mostly from Russia and China and partial to user names involving fake prescription drugs and sexXtoyz.

May I make a suggestion? What about making more stuff public, rather than member only. Members can still have privileges such as the Gallery but it would mean many more could read RayNews for all the right reasons.

Certain topics have always been members only so there's an advantage to being a member over not. If someone can read just as much as a member, there's little reason to register.

Besides, we have no means of luring them in with chocolate.

Thanks Brit. Yes our Ray really needs no assistance, if people are going to join, they'll join.  I think we'll likely see some percentage of Dexter viewers who will come by, but I don't know how many will join.

Not necessarily. If you recall, The Punisher has a large fan base that spans decades and Ray was liked as much as (if not more than) Thomas Jane but we only saw a few people join (maybe 5?) around the time of the film and of those few, 2 or 3 who posted sporadically and have since disappeared.  Yet, I still receive fan mail from Punisher fans praising Ray and hoping he'll reprise the role.  So I think the site will see more traffic from Dexter fans unfamiliar with Ray but the majority will read the site, lurk the board and some will even join, but who knows if they'll participate or stick around. There are over 400 members now, most of whom don't participate.

There are the black lists I've mentioned before, filtering scripts and simply looking up the IP and/or email address. I try to eyeball them anyway because an IP can be blacklisted but the membership request could be legit, while an IP that comes up "clean" will have an address that, when searched, shows up as being a spammer.

Thanks for your response about the membership, Lotis. Personally, any advantage of being a member, for me, is diminished as the numbers of newbies are so small, it doesn't make that much of a difference to the existing RayVing community. And many of them never seem to login or post so I just thought new eyes and participation would be good. But of course, I understand that given the barrage of dubious registrations you get, it's hard to sift the wheat from the chaff.
