I watched the most wonderful charming movie tonight with two of the finest actors of our time, Albert Finney and Tom Courtenay!  I saw them in a lovely, sentimental movie called "A Rather English Marriage: about two elderly men who meet in hospital when their respective wives die the same night. A social worker suggests that they live together to help each other out and the result is so heartwarming it brought tears to my eyes a few times. It is a life affirming, uplifting movie and I hope you all get a chance to see it.

Here's to the BBC, may you continue to make more of these kinds of movies in the future.

That sounds like something I'd like to see. Was that on the BBC America channel, mob? *has a smidgen of hope that there won't be so much "reality tv" :yucky: on BBC America in the future*

I have enjoyed being able to see some of Albert Finney's past work, including 'Tom Jones' :cocky:. I have seen very little of Tom Courteney's work (can't remember what I have seen. :P). I would like to see 'The Dresser' (that was him, right?) and 'The Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner' (him, right? ::) ).

Speaking of long distance running, I know of someone who is getting ready for the New York marathon. omg! I think it's just crazy to make yourself do that if you don't have to. I am dealing with heel spurs (I think that's what it's called. I don't know the nickname for plantar fascitis. Obviously I can't be arsed to look up anything.) right now just from long distance walking.

Hmm. I have heel spurs and I recently bought 2 more pairs of riding-type boots, including one pair that are tall enough to be over my knees. All I need now are jodhpurs and a riding crop (and a riding helmet, I guess...safety, you know...) and I'm all set.

Nah. I would not use a riding crop on a poor horsy. ...Maybe if it is a naughty spotty horse.....

:bead:
Er...not sure that the BBC actually made the movie you refer to Mob. Have seen it and it is food for thought. Cam, if you like Albert Finney try and view 'Saturday Night, Sunday Morning'; made in the 60s and directed by Karel Reisz (not sure of spelling, sorry, and too lazy to look it up!) Enjoy!

Thanks, Toduo! I'll take your recommendation.

Many years I saw some of a film he did with Audrey Hepburn...it had the word "Two" in the title. ? :P  It was about the changing relationship of a couple or something? Now that a lot of years have gone by, I think I could better appreciate it. And I don't have to wait for a good time to watch it with Mr.C. Mr.C gnashes his teeth listening to Audrey Hepburn.  :P :dget: I don't get his reaction :nope: to some women I (and many others) think of as very appealing. :shocking: At least he and I do concur about some other women.  ;D ::)

Thanks, mob. I enjoyed the clip and the song. Glad to learn the name of the song was 'Moonlight Serenade'. I thought it was 'String of Pearls'. :P  I had to find out which song I was mixing it up with, and didn't quite remember the name and  Googled *Glen* Miller ''pearl necklace''. :P Luckily it came up pretty easily even though I misspelled his name and got the title wrong. I puttered around some more. I think my fave Glenn Miller song is 'In the Mood'. Hard not to dance around to that! Glen Miller ruled!  :dance2:

I clicked on a YouTube video someone did using a soundtrack of 'String of Pearls' with stills of several of the movie beauties of the 50's and 60's.

Sheesh. When I tried to see & hear the clip using your link, mob, my computer started asking me to all sorts of questions and asked me to do all sorts of things. I finally gave up because I didn't want to mess anything up, and just went into IMDb and clicked on the video there. :P Thanks anyway, mob. Looks like a lovely film. :)

[edited because I decided my blathering made someone look bad. Someone besides me. :P If he uses terms like that with anyone else, I couldn't say to whom else he applied that awful term. That's why it was a jolt to hear him use it. I still think he's not telling me the whole story. Maybe he encountered that woman as a young boy and she was nasty to him. ]

One of the finest of actors has sadly passed away today. Pete Postlethwaite.

I saw him recently in Brassed Off; a film I've seen so many times and choose to see again and again as its one of my faves. I love the scene at band practice when Gloria, aka Gloria Stitz [Tara Fitzgerald] comes in and asks to join in as she plays the flugelhorn. Pete Postlethwaite is so wonderful in that scene and it's making me smile just thinking about him. A very, very sad and great loss.

Ah yes, Labia, I did hear of his passing and was very sad loving him  as much as you did. I saw Brassed Off along with many other of his fine performances. I am not much younger than he so it makes me take note of my own mortality when someone dies a bit youngish. May he rest in peace..

On a lighter note, not to be missed is all the fine actors in "The King's Speech". Colin Firth and Geoffrey Rush gave Oscar worthy performances in this touching movie. Along with them were the wonderful Claire Bloom, Michael Gambon, Derel Jacobi, Helena Bonham Carter, Timothy Spall and even Guy Pearce as KIng Edward was very good. If they don't win a bunch of awards, I'll be a monkey's aunt.

Ray Stevenson needs to get himself a part in one of these productions. I read that the public as a whole wants more period dramas...like The Three Muskateers.. :yahoo:

I'm up late doing my ironing whilst watching 'As Good As It Gets'.

I never really liked Jack Nicholson before but I'm really loving the film. I've always liked Helen Hunt, too.

Ahhhh - adverts finished... I'm off.....  ;D

:hmm: IRONING? :hmm:  My gosh, Labia, I admire your fortitude in sticking with cotton and linen.  I gave those up years ago so that I wouldn't have to iron.  I learned to iron when I was about 10 to earn money since I didn't receive an allowance.  Let me see if I can remember:  25¢ each for my dad's uniform shirts which were all short sleeves, 30¢ for each dress shirt which was long sleeves, 5¢ for a pillowcase, etc.  I worked hard for my money  :neen:.

And I have always enjoyed Jack Nicholson's work, as well as Helen Hunt's.  I found As Good as It Gets very amusing.

I don't mind ironing, as long as I've got something good on TV to watch as I steam the creases out of my undercrackers *snork*
